How to Become a Firefighter

As firefighters ourselves, the staff at Ricky Rescue Training Academy knows that a career in fire service is one of the most exciting and rewarding career choices you can make.

But how do you become a firefighter?  The states of Florida and Tennessee have standard qualifications you need to serve as a firefighter, although some fire departments have more rigorous requirements.

Basic Standards to be a Firefighter:

  • Age 18 or over

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Good physical condition (certified by a physician or APRN)

  • Valid in-state driver’s license

  • Clean criminal record with no felony convictions (some misdemeanors also prohibited)

  • If you have served in the military, no dishonorable discharge

  • Good moral character

  • Non-smoker for at least one year (State of Florida requirement)

Additional Firefighter Requirements:

To get a job as a firefighter, you will need to meet additional requirements.  Because firefighting can be a stressful job, you will need to complete and pass a psychological examination. You’ll need to complete a drug test, as well as a background check. Your physical skills will be tested through the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test), which measures both strength and endurance. Most fire departments will also have their own written exam.

Advancing in your Firefighter Career:

To continue your career as a firefighter, you’ll need to complete ongoing training and certification. Ricky Rescue Training Academy will be with you every step of the way. Because your time is valuable, our e-learning platform allows you to take these required courses at your own pace.  These online and blended-learning classes are approved by FCDICE/Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training and the Tennessee Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education Commission, and meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements. More important, these firefighter education courses will help you advance up the career ladder.
